A4210×297mm(595×842pt)国内/欧洲的打印与正式提交
Letter216×279mm(612×792pt)北美地区的打印与正式提交

When Images Should Become PDF

JPG / PNG are "pictures"; PDF is a "document". Convert when the recipient expects a fixed-layout file:

  • ID and document submission: government, banking, school, and visa systems accept PDF only — combine several ID photos into one file, in order.
  • Contract / receipt return: combine photographed or scanned signature pages; page order is fixed and single pages can't be swapped easily.
  • Sending many images: one PDF beats fifteen screenshots — the recipient pages through in order, and chat apps won't re-compress it.
  • Printing: placing images on A4 pages beats printing raw images — margins, centering, and scaling are all fixed.

Conversely, if the recipient needs editable source material, keep the original image format.

Page Size: Fit-to-Image vs A4 / Letter

OptionPage sizeBest for
Fit to imageEach page is exactly one imageOn-screen reading: email attachments, chat, online submission previews
A4210×297mm (595×842pt)Printing and formal submission in Europe/Asia
Letter216×279mm (612×792pt)Printing and formal submission in North America

Rule of thumb: for screens and machines, fit to image; for printers and signatures, A4 / Letter. In A4 mode images are scaled proportionally onto the paper (no cropping, no distortion), landscape images rotate the page automatically.

Margins & Orientation

For fixed paper (A4 / Letter), two parameters shape the result:

  • Margins: zero margins run images to the paper edge, where printers may clip content; 10mm narrow suits photo collections; 20mm normal suits files meant for binding or annotation.
  • Orientation: "Auto per image" is easiest — landscape images get landscape pages; fix portrait or landscape manually when a document must be uniform (e.g., for binding).

In "Fit to image" mode the page is the image itself; margin and orientation options don't apply.

Quality vs File Size

Converters typically re-encode images as JPEG before embedding (the most compatible approach):

QualityTypical resultUse
90–100Visually losslessIDs, contracts, scans (default)
75–85Clearly smaller, minor detail lossEmail attachments, chat
<70Visible blocky artifactsDrafts only

Size patterns: PNG screenshots usually shrink (lossless files encode well as JPEG); already-compressed JPGs may grow slightly — a normal cost of re-encoding. For quality-critical work, use high-resolution originals at quality 90.

Ordering Multiple Images

PDF page order = the order you add images. Two practical habits:

  1. Pre-sort by filename: rename files to 01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg before batch-selecting (zero-pad 1–9, or 10.jpg sorts before 2.jpg).
  2. Fine-tune in the tool: use the move-up / move-down buttons per row, then verify thumbnail order before generating.

Privacy: Cloud Upload vs Local Conversion

Mainstream online converters (iLovePDF, Smallpdf, PDF24, etc.) work by uploading your file to their servers and handing back a download link. For ordinary photos this doesn't matter — but for IDs, contracts, or medical bills, think twice: you don't control how long the server-side copy is retained.

The alternative is in-browser local conversion: the conversion logic runs in your browser, files never leave the device, and it works offline. Our Image to PDF tool takes this route — the PDF itself is generated byte-by-byte in your browser, suitable for sensitive material like IDs.

FAQ

Q: Does converting images to PDF lose quality?

A: PNG transparency can't survive (transparent areas get a white fill), and images are typically re-encoded as JPEG — quality 90 is visually lossless. Drop to 75–85 to shrink.

Q: Fit-to-image or A4?

A: On-screen reading → fit to image (each page is one image). Printing or formal submission → A4 (Europe/Asia) or Letter (North America).

Q: Is it safe to upload ID photos to an online converter?

A: Mainstream tools upload files to their servers. For sensitive material like IDs, prefer a tool that runs entirely in your browser.

Q: What determines the page order of multiple images?

A: The order you add them. Pre-number filenames 01, 02, 03 before batch upload, or reorder with move-up/move-down buttons.

Q: PNG to PDF vs JPG to PDF — any difference?

A: Same workflow. PNG screenshots usually shrink; compressed JPGs may grow slightly. Transparent PNGs get a white fill.

Q: Why can't I just rename an image to .pdf?

A: PDF is a structured document format (objects, cross-reference tables, page tree), not an image extension. Renamed files won't open — a real converter must generate valid structure.
